About me

Hello, I'm Emma

I'm an award-winning medical writer and plain English editor from Melbourne, Australia.

Words are powerful when wielded well. I've known this since I was a little girl writing poems at my grandma's kitchen table – hot Milo in one hand and pen in the other. In that kitchen, I learned that words have rhythm and reason, that they can be playful and persuasive.

I still write poems (and drink Milo), but nowadays I use my skills to craft clear communications that help bridge health equity gaps.

Over the past decade, I've honed my expertise across different industries – from travel to marketing and creative services. These spaces equipped me with diverse expertise and gave me the confidence to grow beyond my writing and editing comfort zone, into branding, media, marketing and search engine optimisation.

Why medical communications?

The health system can be tricky for the most medically literate people to understand - let alone those with language or literacy barriers. But everyone deserves to make informed decisions about their own health and wellbeing.

Medical writing lets me use my skills to help people navigate health care challenges. It’s a rewarding way to harness my acute attention to detail and love for sharing knowledge with others.

Every day in this specialty brings something new. One minute I'm learning about complex drug interactions; the next, I'm researching Addison’s disease for a fact sheet about paediatric adrenal crisis. After years in the field, I’m yet to face a topic I can’t explain in simple English.

My process pillars

I start every project with the same three steps:

Topic research

I always start new projects by deep-diving into relevant literature and trawling through trusted sources to form an accurate understanding of the topic.
