Case study

Crafting a new suite of fact sheets with SixString Design

Client

SixString Design is a creative studio based in Brisbane, Australia. For this project, I collaborated with SixString Design’s Director, Frank Winters, to create content for BreastScreen Victoria – the Victorian branch of the national breast cancer screening program.

Brief

The brief was to edit BreastScreen Victoria’s entire suite of 50+ community health fact sheets to showcase their refreshed brand. SixString Design were commissioned to design and build the fact sheets; my role was to edit existing medical copy into brand-compliant plain English to go in them. As the fact sheets were designed for print, the copy had to accommodate the word limits of print collateral.

Key goals:

  • Edit copy for 50+ medical fact sheets into brand-compliant plain English.

  • Work collaboratively to ensure the new content fits the fact sheet templates and reflects the refreshed brand.

  • Review fact sheet design drafts and provide feedback for enhancements.

Result

We successfully delivered the final suite of fact sheets to the deadline. Feedback from BreastScreen Victoria staff and clients was extremely positive, with many complementing the engaging design and accessible language. Frank and I have since worked together on many other successful BreastScreen Victoria projects.

Emma’s mastery of wordcraft became immediately obvious as she wove her magic on the extensive copy decks required for the suite of BreastScreen Victoria resources. She is adept at finding the right balance between simple plain English, and important medical messaging.

On several occasions, there were scenarios where copy would physically not fit (for example, on a two-page fact sheet). Once we relayed this to Emma she was able to revise the copy using an economy of words to make the copy fit without sacrificing the integrity of the message.

Emma understands the practicalities of design, and always thinks of the end user – in this case, the client. Her attention to detail, consistency, proofreading skills and ability to spot a typo from 200 meters is second-to-none. Our roll-out was particularly time sensitive, but Emma’s project management skills steered us smoothly through the timeframes. All of the above was done with a smile and a sense of humour. Emma is truly a proactive consummate professional, and I hope to someday work with her again.
